Germanic National Museum
The Germanic National Museum, the venue of the academical programme, is the largest museum for cultural history in the German speeking area. You will get the opportunity to join tours guided by the heads of the different departments.
The Germanisches Nationalmuseum was established in 1852. Today the museum’s holdings contain more than 1.3 million objects, thus constituting the largest museum of cultural history in the German-speaking regions. As a national museum and as an internationally recognised research institution, its purpose is to collect, preserve, study and exhibit objects and documents pertaining to culture and history of the German-speaking world. Approximately 25,000 originals are displayed in the permanent exhibition, divided into 23 collections. They offer a journey through time, from paleolithic hand-axes and the Golden Cone of Ezelsdorf-Buch to medieval sculptures of Veit Stoß and Tilman Riemenschneider, the Behaim Globe, outstanding works of Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt all the way to Art and Design of the 20th century. Frequently changing special exhibitions highlight specialized aspects.
Collections
Beside the 23 collections, the museum consists a historical archive, the German Art Archive with gifts and bequests in the visual arts, a numismatic collection and a graphic arts collection (Department of Prints and Drawings). The research library contains more than 650,000 volumes in the areas of European art and cultural history and is open to the public. The Institute for Art Technology and Conservation is one of the largest institutes of this kind in Germany. Not only responsible for the conservation of the entire collection, it also supports practical training within the course of study for professional restorers.
As a foundation under public law, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum is supported by the Federal Republic of Germany (Ministry for Education and Research), the Free State of Bavaria (Bavarian State Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts), and the city of Nuremberg.
Research Museum
The Germanisches Nationalmuseum is a member of the Leibniz-Association (Leibniz-Gemeinschaft), it is the only cultural history museum among the eight research museums of this scientific association. Setting nation-wide standards through its scientific and scholarly achievements, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum carries the reputation of a dependable reference point in the museum landscape. The museum investigates art and culture in German-speaking areas in an internationally integrated and innovative way, offering educational experiences in dialogue form.
