Today, as in antiquity, waters serve in various ways as resources – as waterways for traffic, places to harvest fish and other foods, a source of energy, a reservoir, or as a home of spiritual powers. The type and intensity of use depend, apart from natural conditions, mainly on cultural, social and political factors.

The subject of this conference is the diversity of the ways in which waters are used and the corresponding background conditions. We will use concrete case studies to consider the bodies of water, how they are used, and the corresponding infrastructure on land (ports, landing places, coastal/riverine landscapes). Naturally we will also examine the role the bodies of water play in the corresponding societies in this forum conducted together with the CRC/SFB 1070 ResourceCultures at the University of Tübingen.
