The cultural programme of this conference forms an interesting event in its own right. You can choose in your registration in which excursions you wish to participate. On this webpage you find all most recent information on the offered events. Due to organisational and weather-dependent factors, we reserve the right to make modifications. Hence it is recommended to check this webpage for updates on a regular basis. The precise time frame and other information will be announced in due course.
Even if you have already registered, you can still alter your  choice  regarding your participation afterwards. Please communicate any alterations to Mr. Peter Winterstein (Email: wintersteindeguwa.org). A confirmation of your participation at the respective events will be given in early February 2009.

Guided tour in the Archaeology Museum of Lübeck

In the archaeological museum of Lübeck predominantly finds from the historical centre of the city are on display. Lübeck is considered as Germany's archaeologically best studied town and as centre of northern European medieval archaeology. The entire historical centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an archaeological protectorate. Around 3,5 million finds were recovered within 60 years of numerous excavation campaigns to all aspects of medieval life, like building, household and artisanry, trade, gambling and recreation.

Guided tour in the German Maritime Museum (DSM), Bremerhaven

As national maritime museum of the Federal Republic of Germany, the 'Deutsche Schiffahrtsmuseum' (DSM) in Bremerhaven has a number of important archaeological ship and boat finds from the medieval and early post-medieval periods in its collection. Around the central object of this exhibition - the Bremen Hansa Cog of 1380 - a new exhibtion on seafaring and trade of the Hanseatic period as well as on nautical and underwater archaeology is currently being developed. These boat and ship finds and the projected exhibtion scheme will be introduced at the DSM guided tour.

Thursday, 19.02.09 at 11:00 (departure time at the meeting point) | This dive trail leads to a 17th/18th century wrecksite, which is currently investigated by the State Archaeological  Department of Schleswig-Holstein and AMLA. A personal dry-suit and preferably a complete diving kit should be brought along. Alternatively diving equipment could be rented at the Baltic Dive Center or at 'Tauchzentrum am Exer' where a stopover will be made. Cylinders will be provided in any case.

Number of participants: max. 20 persons (fully booked!)

Costs: 20 EUR for the participation at one dive excursion or, alternatively, 30 EUR for the participation at both dive excursions. The participation fee will be paid on site.

Friday, 20.02.09 at 11:00 (departure time at the meeting point) | This dive trail leads to the "underwater park" in Lake Plön, where the visitor will see the archaeological remains of a Slavonic bridge and the 'Olsborg'. A personal dry-suit and preferably a complete diving kit should be brought along. Alternatively diving equipment could be rented at the 'Baltic Dive Center' or at 'Tauchzentrum am Exer' where a stopover will be made. Cylinders will be provided in any case.

Number of participants: max. 20 persons (fully booked!)

Friday, 20.02.09 at 9:00-11:00 (first trip) and 11:00-13:00 (second trip) | This round trip on the GEOMAR research vessel LITTORINA will be accompanied by comments on Kiel's maritime past. The ship will sail to Ellerbek, the site of Jahn-Warck, the coastal fortress of Friedrichsort, the wreck of Bülk and the site off Kalifornien.

Number of participants: max. 12 persons per trip (fully booked!)
